Ajāmila‑mokṣa‑līlā

Ajāmila-mokṣa-līlā — darśanam
Śāstra‑mārga Ajāmila‑mokṣa‑līlā
अजामिल‑मोक्ष‑लीला — Ajāmila‑mokṣa‑līlā
Deliverance of Ajāmila by the power of the holy name.

Saṅkṣepa (concise narration)

At the end of his life, Ajāmila called out the name "Nārāyaṇa" in fear—addressing his son, yet the Holy Name acted beyond his intention. The Lord’s messengers protected him from the servants of Yama, revealing that Nāma is supremely merciful and that even a shadow of sincere calling can awaken the path back to bhakti.

"nārāyaṇeti nāmāśu yadāhvayad ajāmilaḥ
tadā śrī‑hari‑dūtās te prāyayuḥ kṛpaṇasya tat"

When Ajāmila quickly chanted the holy name "Nārāyaṇa", the messengers of Śrī Hari immediately came and gave him protection because he was in a helpless condition.

— Śrīmad‑Bhāgavatam 6.2.49 (essence)

Śāstra‑pramāṇa (scriptural proof)

ŚB 6.2.14‑15 — The power of Nārāyaṇa‑nāma
aho bata śva‑paco ’to garīyān
yaj‑jihvāgre vartate nāma tubhyam
tepus tapas te juhuvuḥ sasnur āryā
brahmānūcur nāma gṛṇanti ye te Translation: Oh, how glorious is the birth of even a low‑born dog‑eater who has taken the Lord's holy name on his tongue! The so‑called Aryans perform austerities, fire sacrifices, bathing, and study of the Vedas, but only those who chant Your holy names actually glorify You.
ŚB 6.3.24‑26 — Viṣṇudūtas explain Nāma‑mahātmya
yathāgnir daru‑su‑gūḍho
dahaty eva tathātmā‑ni
saṃyuktaḥ sarvam ātmānaṁ
pāpa‑rāśiṁ nirdahaty ajaḥ Translation: As fire lying dormant in wood manifests when kindled and burns the wood, so the holy name of the Supreme Lord, though uttered in a helpless condition or by inattentive chanting, burns to ashes all the reactions of one's sinful life.
ŚB 6.2.10 — One name is sufficient
nāma‑ny eva haranty āśu
pāpāni kṛta‑niṣkṛtām
nāmnāṁ sataṁ hi yāvanti
śaktayaḥ pāpa‑karmaṇām Translation: The holy names of the Lord are so powerful that they can instantly destroy all sinful reactions, regardless of how many or how grievous they may be. The holy names have as many potencies as there are sinful activities.
ŚB 6.1.15‑16 — Ajāmila's transformation
iti sañcintya manasā
sva‑karma‑vyatikramaṁ vibhoḥ
śanaiḥ śanair anudinam
yayau śāntim anuttamām Translation: Thus reflecting within his mind on the supreme transcendental position of the Lord and his own offenses, Ajāmila gradually became completely pure in heart. Day by day, he attained supreme peace.

Tattva (what this lila teaches)

Nāma is independent and all‑merciful: Even when Ajāmila did not fully understand the spiritual depth, the Lord’s Name acted as the Lord’s mercy.
Bhakti is not cancelled by a fallen past: The Bhāgavatam shows that the Holy Name can reopen a person’s destiny.
Protection comes through taking shelter: When we hold to Nāma—especially in fear, confusion or weakness—Kṛṣṇa gives the strength to return to a clean life and pure remembrance.

Sevā today (simple practice)

1) Chant with shelter‑consciousness
Chant one focused round with this prayer in heart: "O Holy Name, please protect me from forgetfulness and bring me back to Your shelter."
2) Avoid one nāma‑aparādha today
Specifically guard against harsh speech (vāco‑vegam) — one of the ten offenses to the holy name.
3) Share the Name's protection
Send one person the link to today’s līlā, sharing how Ajāmila was saved by chanting "Nārāyaṇa".
"nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija‑sarva‑śaktis
tatrārpitā niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥ
etādṛśī tava kṛpā bhagavan mamāpi
durdaivam īdṛśam ihājani nānurāgaḥ"

O my Lord, Your holy name alone can render all benediction to living beings, and thus You have hundreds and millions of names. In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are no hard and fast rules for chanting these names. My misfortune is that I have no attraction for them.

— Śikṣāṣṭaka 2 (Lord Caitanya's prayer)
