JAPA TIME

A short preparation for attentive chanting

24/7 LIVE CHANTING

Before Japa

A simple and prayerful preparation can help the mind approach japa as service to the Holy Name.

This guide is offered as a practical devotional aid for personal sādhana. It does not replace the guidance of guru, sādhus, śāstra, local ISKCON authorities, temple pūjārīs, or senior Vaiṣṇavas. For formal Deity worship and temple service, please follow your local authorized standards.

Preparation

  1. Wash the hands and, if possible, perform simple ācamana.
  2. Sit in a clean and peaceful place.
  3. Offer respects to Śrīla Prabhupāda, guru, and the Vaiṣṇavas.
  4. Chant the Pañca-tattva mahā-mantra.
  5. Remember the ten offenses to the Holy Name.
  6. Begin japa with the prayer: “Please allow me to hear the Holy Name attentively and avoid offenses.”
Pañca-tattva mahā-mantra:
śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu-nityānanda
śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda
