Ekādaśī and Pāraṇa — A Śāstra-Grounded Practical Guide

Ekādaśī is observed to deepen remembrance and service to Śrī Hari. Fasting supports that purpose; it is not an independent display of austerity. Exact observance and pāraṇa times depend on the local sunrise and tithi, so always use a location-based Vaiṣṇava calendar and follow the standard authorized by guru and local temple.

Important: Calendar note: JAPA TIME calculates location-based dates and pāraṇa windows with Gaurabda Calendar 0.8.4. For official observance, initiation vows, health-related fasting decisions or uncertain calendar cases, follow your spiritual authority and local temple.

Śāstric foundation

  • The Nectar of Devotion, Chapter 6 lists observing the Ekādaśī fast among the basic principles of devotional service.
  • Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 1.35 identifies the twelfth vilāsa of Hari-bhakti-vilāsa as describing Ekādaśī and the thirteenth as describing fasting and Mahā-dvādaśī.
  • Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto 9, Chapter 4 presents Mahārāja Ambarīṣa's careful Ekādaśī–Dvādaśī observance within a life fully dedicated to the Lord.

Choose the correct local day

  • Do not determine the observance merely by a civil date copied from another city. Vaiṣṇava calendar rules evaluate tithi in relation to local sunrise and other conditions.
  • Use the JAPA TIME location calendar for calculation, then verify official observance with your local temple when necessary.
  • A special Mahā-dvādaśī or other calendar condition may shift the fasting day; follow the calculated observance rather than guessing.

How to spend Ekādaśī

  • Increase śravaṇam, kīrtanam, remembrance, prayer and practical service. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.5.23–24 provides the nine processes of bhakti as the positive heart of the day.
  • Protect time for attentive japa and kṛṣṇa-kathā. Reduce avoidable distraction and unnecessary material activity.
  • Offer the day's austerity and service to Kṛṣṇa rather than treating the vrata as a source of pride or bargaining.

Fasting with discernment

  • The common Vaiṣṇava minimum is to avoid grains and legumes on the authorized fasting day. Stricter standards should be accepted responsibly under guidance.
  • Children, pregnant or nursing devotees, elderly devotees and people with illness or medication needs should follow an appropriate authorized standard. The purpose is remembrance and service, not harm or competition.
  • Take only Kṛṣṇa-prasāda permitted by the standard you follow, with simplicity and gratitude.

Pāraṇa on Dvādaśī

  • Pāraṇa means completing the Ekādaśī fast within the specific window shown for the next day. The window is local and should not be copied from another location.
  • Prepare in advance so the fast can be completed within the calculated window without neglect.
  • Continue remembrance and Vaiṣṇava conduct after pāraṇa; the observance should strengthen regular bhakti rather than end with the meal.
