24/7 LIVE CHANTING

Śikṣāṣṭakam — Eight Instructions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu left these eight prayers as a complete path of inner cultivation. Read them in order, without imitating advanced realization: begin with attentive chanting, humility and service, and receive the later prayers as the direction of pure devotion.

The glory of saṅkīrtana

1

ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ sarvātma-snapanaṁ paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanam

Śrī Kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtana cleanses the heart, extinguishes the fire of material existence and awakens auspiciousness, spiritual knowledge and expanding bliss.

Practice: Chant one round while deliberately hearing each name, returning the mind without irritation.

The mercy present in the Holy Name

2

nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis tatrārpitā niyamitaḥ smaraṇe na kālaḥ etādṛśī tava kṛpā bhagavan mamāpi durdaivam īdṛśam ihājani nānurāgaḥ

The Lord has manifested many names, invested them with His potencies and made remembrance widely accessible; the devotee honestly laments a lack of attraction.

Practice: Add one brief period of chanting today and pray for genuine attraction rather than judging your present condition.

The disposition for constant chanting

3

tṛṇād api su-nīcena taror iva sahiṣṇunā amāninā māna-dena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

Humility, tolerance, freedom from demands for honor and respect for others create the disposition in which Hari can be chanted constantly.

Practice: Before japa, offer respects to guru and Vaiṣṇavas and release one demand for recognition.

Unmotivated devotion

4

na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye mama janmani janmanīśvare bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi

The devotee does not make wealth, followers, beauty or prestige the goal, but asks for causeless devotion birth after birth.

Practice: Perform one service without announcing it or expecting a return.

The identity of a servant

5

ayi nanda-tanuja kiṅkaraṁ patitaṁ māṁ viṣame bhavāmbudhau kṛpayā tava pāda-paṅkaja- sthita-dhūlī-sadṛśaṁ vicintaya

The soul appeals to Nanda's son for mercy, remembering its eternal identity as His servant and longing for shelter at His lotus feet.

Separation from Govinda

7

yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvaṁ govinda-viraheṇa me

At the height of devotion, even a moment without Govinda feels like an age and the world appears empty in separation.

Practice: Receive this prayer reverently; cultivate remembrance without imitating the symptoms of perfected love.

Unconditional fidelity

8

āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām adarśanān marma-hatāṁ karotu vā yathā tathā vā vidadhātu lampaṭo mat-prāṇa-nāthas tu sa eva nāparaḥ

Pure devotion remains exclusively faithful to Kṛṣṇa whether He gives closeness or remains unseen; service is not a bargain for comfort.

Practice: Continue one duty of bhakti today even if inspiration or immediate reward is absent.
