Bhagavad-gita Online: Where to Begin Reading
Bhagavad-gita As It Is can be read in the JAPA TIME scripture library. Read in chapter order or open a particular verse with its Sanskrit, translation and purport.
A first reading path
- Chapter 1: understand Arjuna's question before looking for an answer.
- Chapter 2: begin with the distinction between the body and the self; verse 2.13 is a useful place to pause.
- Verse 4.34: consider the role of the spiritual teacher and sincere inquiry.
- Chapter 9 and chapter 12: study devotion in the context of Kṛṣṇa's whole conversation with Arjuna.
- Chapter 18: return to the concluding instruction, including verse 18.66.
How to study one verse
Read the Sanskrit and transliteration, then the word meanings, translation and purport. Ask what Kṛṣṇa says here, to whom, and how the point follows from the surrounding verses. If an isolated line seems difficult, return to its chapter.
A short passage read attentively is enough for a daily practice. Choose one instruction to reflect on and apply rather than racing through chapters.
