JAPA TIME — Lord Caitanya meets the cows of Vṛndāvana

Pramāṇa (Śāstra reference)

In Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 17.192–206, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu goes to see the forests of Vṛndāvana. As the Lord passes the grazing grounds, the cows immediately surround Him and moo loudly. Mahāprabhu becomes stunned in ecstatic love, and the cows affectionately lick Him. Regaining composure, the Lord caresses them, and they do not wish to leave Him. Deer, birds, peacocks, trees and creepers then welcome the Lord like a long-lost friend.

Saṅkṣepa (short meaning)

In the forests of Vṛndāvana, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu meets the grazing herds. The cows recognize the Lord, surround Him and lick Him with great affection. Absorbed in love for Kṛṣṇa, Mahāprabhu caresses them, and the cows do not wish to leave. All moving and nonmoving beings of Vṛndāvana answer the Lord’s presence with love and the Holy Name.

During japa, remember how all Vṛndāvana answered Kṛṣṇa’s name and carefully hear every Name.

2. Offer practical care

Perform one concrete act of kind care for a cow, an animal or a place entrusted to you, without exploitation or neglect.

Read Cc. Madhya 17.192–206 in sequence and open the highlighted 17.194–196 account of the cows’ meeting with the Lord.
