JAPA TIME — Lord Caitanya meets Rāmānanda Rāya on the bank of the Godāvarī

Pramāṇa (Śāstra reference)

In Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 8.13–24, Rāmānanda Rāya arrives on the bank of the Godāvarī. Seeing the effulgent sannyāsī, he offers full obeisances. The Lord asks him to rise and chant Kṛṣṇa’s name, identifies him as Rāmānanda and firmly embraces him. Natural love awakens in them both: they almost lose consciousness, fall to the ground, shed tears, tremble and utter Kṛṣṇa’s name in faltering voices.

Saṅkṣepa (short meaning)

At Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya’s request, Mahāprabhu seeks Rāmānanda Rāya. Their first meeting takes place not in a palace but on the bank of the sacred Godāvarī. The Lord does not judge Rāmānanda by social position: He immediately recognizes an exalted devotee, raises him and embraces him. Thus begins the Rāmānanda-saṁvāda, a profound discussion of life’s goal and pure devotion.

Meeting on the Godāvarī

Rāmānanda Rāya comes to the Godāvarī in a palanquin, accompanied by musicians and brāhmaṇas (8.13–14).

The effulgent sannyāsī

Rāmānanda sees Mahāprabhu, whose body shines like hundreds of suns and who wears saffron cloth (8.18–19).

Mahāprabhu asks whether he is Rāmānanda Rāya, and Rāmānanda replies humbly (8.21).

The Lord firmly embraces Rāmānanda; love awakens in both, expressed through tears, trembling and faltering voices (8.22–24).

Bhakti transcends external distinctions

In the conversation that follows, Mahāprabhu hears spiritual conclusions from Rāmānanda without reducing a devotee’s worth to birth or office.

Mahāprabhu personally seeks Rāmānanda and first expresses the desire to embrace him (8.20–22).

Sevā today (practice for this day)

1. Chant Kṛṣṇa’s name

Following Mahāprabhu’s request to Rāmānanda, begin practice by clearly pronouncing the Holy Name and hearing each name attentively.

2. Honor a devotee

Consciously set aside judgment based on external position today and recognize one quality in another person’s devotional service.
