Pramāṇa (Śāstra reference)
Chaitanya-caritamrita, Madhya-lila, Chapter 5 describes the famous Sakshi-Gopala lila. Two brahmanas travel together on pilgrimage. The elder brahmana, moved by the younger man’s sincere service, promises before Lord Gopala in Vrindavana to give him his daughter in marriage. Later, under family pressure, the promise is denied. The young brahmana returns to Vrindavana and prays to Gopala to protect religious truth. By His causeless mercy, Lord Gopala walks behind him and appears before the assembled people as the witness.
Saṅkṣepa (short meaning)
This lila reveals the Lord’s deep affection for truthfulness, devotion and sincere service. The young brahmana does not approach Gopala for prestige or personal victory; he wants the elder brahmana’s promise, spoken before the Lord, to remain protected. Gopala, who appears as a temple deity, shows that He is not stone or imagination. He is the living Supreme Lord, fully able to walk, speak and protect dharma. The lila teaches that honest service offered with humility reaches the heart of Bhagavan, and that the Lord Himself may become the witness for His devotee.
