JAPA TIME — Shukadeva comes to Parikshit on the bank of the Ganga

Pramāṇa (Śāstra reference)

Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto 1, Chapter 19 describes how, after being cursed to die in seven days, Maharaja Parikshit renounces royal life, sits on the bank of the Ganga, and resolves to fast until death while hearing from saintly persons. Many sages assemble there. Then Sri Shukadeva Goswami, the self-satisfied son of Vyasa, arrives, and all present rise to honor him. Parikshit receives him with reverence and asks the essential question: what should a person hear, chant, remember, and do at the time of death?

Saṅkṣepa (short meaning)

This lila reveals how divine providence brings the perfect speaker and the perfect listener together. Parikshit has only seven days, but he does not waste time in fear, resentment, or regret. He takes shelter of the Ganga, the sages, and hearing about the Supreme Lord. Shukadeva appears unexpectedly, detached from all social convention, yet recognized by realized sages as the highest authority. The meeting becomes the sacred opening through which Srimad-Bhagavatam is spoken for the welfare of the world.

Parikshit accepts the curse

Maharaja Parikshit learns that he will die in seven days and turns his attention completely toward spiritual perfection.

He goes to the Ganga

Chant one attentive round praying, “O Krishna, please let me hear Srimad-Bhagavatam with the urgency of Maharaja Parikshit.”
