64 Items of Devotional Service
The traditional list of principal practices appears in The Nectar of Devotion as a practical map of sādhana-bhakti. The items should be understood under proper guidance, not mechanically.
Sādhana-bhakti
Sādhana-bhakti means regulated devotional practice that awakens the eternal perfection of love for Kṛṣṇa. Its heart is service performed with faith and under Vaiṣṇava guidance.
Hearing and Chanting
Śravaṇa and kīrtana are central limbs of bhakti. They purify the heart when performed with humility, service attitude and attention to Kṛṣṇa.
Śrī Īśopaniṣad Mantra 1
Mantra 1 teaches that everything is controlled and owned by the Lord. The devotee learns responsible use, gratitude and freedom from possessiveness.
Knowledge
Śrī Īśopaniṣad guides the reader beyond partial knowledge and ignorance toward sambandha: seeing the Lord, His energies and the living beings in proper relation.
Non-envy
The Īśopaniṣad vision weakens envy because everything belongs to the Lord and every living being has a relationship with Him.
The Lord’s Energies
The Lord is complete, and His energies work under His control. This supports a personal, devotional understanding of reality rather than impersonal emptiness.
Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.1
Brahmā glorifies Kṛṣṇa as Govinda, the Supreme Controller with an eternal spiritual body.
Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.29
This verse meditates on Govinda in His eternal abode, surrounded by loving service and spiritual beauty.
Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.32
Brahma-saṁhitā describes the Lord’s transcendental senses and form, beyond material limitation.
Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.38
The devotee sees Govinda through eyes anointed with love. This verse should be approached as prayer, not merely philosophy.
Kṛṣṇa Book: Advent
Study Kṛṣṇa’s appearance with the Tenth Canto context and Śrīla Prabhupāda’s authorized summary in Kṛṣṇa Book.
Vṛndāvana Līlās
Kṛṣṇa’s Vraja pastimes reveal intimate love, protection and sweetness. Read them with reverence and avoid treating them as ordinary stories.
Protection
The Lord protects His devotees in many ways: directly, through His devotees and through His arrangement. Kṛṣṇa Book gives many examples in Vraja, Mathurā and Dvārakā.
Demons
The slaying of demons is not ordinary violence; it reveals the Lord’s protection, the collapse of adharma and the purification of those touched by Him.
Devotees
Kṛṣṇa Book shows many moods of devotion: parental love, friendship, service, surrender and royal affection. The devotee studies these moods with humility.
Vaiṣṇava Etiquette
Etiquette protects humility, cleanliness, respect and service. For formal worship or temple standards, follow your guru, local pūjārīs, temple authorities and senior Vaiṣṇavas.
Vows
Vows should support remembrance and service, not pride. Ekādaśī, Cāturmāsya and other observances should be followed according to authorized guidance and one’s situation.
