Hanumān brings the mountain of healing herbs for Lakṣmaṇa

Hanumān brings the mountain of healing herbs for Lakṣmaṇa
Strength offered in urgent service Yuddha-kāṇḍa 100–101
Hanumān brings the mountain of healing herbs for Lakṣmaṇa

Pramāṇa (Śāstra reference)

Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 6.100 describes how Lakṣmaṇa protects Vibhīṣaṇa when Rāvaṇa turns his śakti weapon against him (6.100.28–33). The spear enters Lakṣmaṇa’s chest and he falls to the earth (6.100.34–36). Rāma is overcome with grief, draws out and breaks the weapon, and remains beside his wounded brother (6.100.37–45). In 6.101, the learned vānara physician Suṣeṇa reassures Rāma that Lakṣmaṇa is alive: his face has not changed, his heart still beats and he breathes (6.101.25–30). Suṣeṇa sends Hanumān to bring four herbs from the southern peak of the medicinal mountain—Viśalyakaraṇī, Sāvarṇyakaraṇī, Sañjīvakaraṇī and Sandhānī (6.101.31–33). Unable to identify them and unwilling to lose precious time, Hanumān uproots the flowering mountain peak and carries it through the sky (6.101.34–40). He arrives, sets the peak down and explains that he brought it whole (6.101.41–42). Suṣeṇa takes and crushes the herb, administers it through Lakṣmaṇa’s nose, and Lakṣmaṇa rises free of the weapon and pain. Rāma then embraces him with tears of affection (6.101.43–48).

Saṅkṣepa (short meaning)

Lakṣmaṇa lies unconscious, but Suṣeṇa recognizes the signs of life and gives Hanumān a precise service. When Hanumān cannot distinguish the four herbs, he does not return empty-handed: he brings the whole mountain peak. His immense strength becomes an instrument of attentive, urgent service.

Sevā today (practice for this day)

1. Answer urgent service promptly
Complete one necessary duty today without postponing it for convenience.
2. Do not hide uncertainty
When you cannot distinguish the right course, seek qualified guidance and bring back what can be verified.
3. Read the exact healing passage
Read Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 6.101.31–48 and remember Hanumān’s determination during japa.
Unable to distinguish the herbs, Hanumān brought the whole mountain peak rather than return without the needed remedy.
— Reflection on Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 6.100.28–45; 6.101.25–48
