Pramāṇa (Śāstra reference)

Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Araṇya-kāṇḍa, Sargas 50–52 — when Ravana abducts Sita, Jatayu confronts him in the sky, rebukes him for adharma, and fights to rescue her. In the combat, Jatayu breaks Ravana’s bow and chariot, kills the chariot’s mules, and strikes down the charioteer, before Ravana finally cuts him down.

Saṅkṣepa (short meaning)

This lila reveals the glory of selfless devotion and righteous courage. Jatayu, though aged and facing a far stronger enemy, cannot tolerate the abduction of Sita and rises at once to defend her. He does not fight for fame, victory, or personal gain, but out of loyalty to Lord Rama and out of dharma. His battle shows that true devotion expresses itself in fearless service, even at the cost of one’s own life.

Tattva (essential teaching) — with śāstra

Bhakti acts to protect dharma
Bhakti is not passive sentiment; it acts to protect dharma and to serve the Lord under danger. Jatayu’s service is heroic because it is selfless.
Greatness is measured by loyalty to the Lord
Greatness is measured not by bodily strength or success, but by loyalty to the Lord and willingness to sacrifice oneself in His service.
Service makes apparent defeat glorious
Even apparent defeat becomes glorious when one gives everything for the Lord’s mission. Jatayu falls outwardly, but his act becomes immortal in Rāmāyaṇa.

Sevā today (practice for this day)

1. Chant one attentive round
Chant one attentive round praying, “May I serve with courage and loyalty like Jatayu.”
2. Protect a sacred principle
Protect one sacred principle today instead of remaining passive when dharma is neglected.
3. Offer service without calculation
Offer one act of service without calculating comfort, reputation, or personal gain.
Even apparent defeat becomes glorious when one gives everything for the Lord’s mission.
— Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Araṇya-kāṇḍa 50–52
