Vāmana–Trivikrama līlā — Bali Mahārāja's surrender — darśanam
Śāstra‑mārga Vāmana–Trivikrama‑līlā
वामन–त्रिविक्रम‑लीला — Vāmana–Trivikrama‑līlā
Bali Mahārāja’s surrender — the third step.

Saṅkṣepa (concise narration)

Bali Mahārāja, faithful to his word, offers three steps of land to Vāmana. The Lord expands as Trivikrama and covers the worlds with two steps. When there is no place left for the third, Bali does not retreat—he offers his own head. The Supreme Lord places His lotus foot upon Bali and accepts his surrender, teaching that true greatness is humility, and that the Lord is pleased when devotion stands firm even under test.

Bali’s glory is not power, but complete submission to the Lord. Keeping one’s word in devotion: steadfastness in dharma is honored by the Lord.

The Lord tests and protects bhakti: what looks like defeat becomes divine elevation. Mercy beyond judgement: the Lord accepts surrender and establishes the devotee in shelter.

— Śrīmad‑Bhāgavatam Canto 8, Vāmana‑Bali episode

Śāstra‑pramāṇa (scriptural proof)

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Canto 8 — Vāmana–Bali episode
The Lord approaches Bali as Vāmana and asks for three steps.
The Lord expands as Trivikrama and takes two steps that cover the worlds.
Bali offers his head for the third step; the Lord accepts his surrender and reveals mercy. Pramāṇa: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto 8 (Vāmana–Bali episode; esp. the surrender and the “third step”)
The Lord’s test and Bali’s unwavering promise
Even when faced with the loss of everything, Bali Mahārāja did not break his word. He said: “I have promised, and I shall give.” This demonstrates that the Lord values integrity and surrender more than material power or possession.
Bali’s surrender and the Lord’s foot on his head
“There is no place left for the third step. Please place Your lotus foot on my head.” Bali’s ultimate offering—his own self—is the perfection of śaraṇāgati. The Lord, pleased, grants him eternal shelter and rulership of Sutala.
The mercy beyond judgement
The Lord told Bali: “Because you did not withdraw your promise even in adversity, I am bound by your devotion. You will always have My presence.” True victory is not in conquering worlds, but in conquering the Lord’s heart through unwavering devotion and humility.

Tattva (what this lila teaches)

Śaraṇāgati (surrender) is victory: Bali’s glory is not power, but complete submission to the Lord.
Keeping one’s word in devotion: steadfastness in dharma is honored by the Lord.
The Lord tests and protects bhakti: what looks like defeat becomes divine elevation.
Mercy beyond judgement: the Lord accepts surrender and establishes the devotee in shelter.

Sevā today (simple practice)

1) Chant with one intention
Chant one focused round with one intention: “Let me offer my pride at Your lotus feet.”
2) Keep one vow/promise
Quietly keep one vow/promise today (time, service, restraint) and mentally offer the result to the Lord.
3) One act of humility
Do one act of humility: ask forgiveness / give respect / serve without being seen.
“The Lord is pleased not by grand offerings but by the sincerity of surrender. When the devotee offers even the most humble thing with love, the Lord accepts it as the greatest treasure.”

Bali Mahārāja’s story teaches that the Lord’s measurement is not of how much we give, but of how much of ourselves we offer in the giving.

— Śrīmad‑Bhāgavatam 8.22
