These traditional habits help protect cleanliness, attentiveness, and respect during daily japa.

Practical reminders
- Keep japa beads in a clean bead bag.
- Do not place the beads on the floor.
- Do not step over the beads.
- Do not touch the beads with unclean hands.
- Do not cross over the head bead.
- Chant attentively, trying to hear each name.
- Do not treat the beads as decoration or an ordinary object.
- Respect the japa-mālā as a helper in service to the Holy Name.
